I’m not trying to de-hype anyone excited for Bethesda’s games, if you want to buy them and are excited then you go ahead and I hope you enjoy them
I’m just very wary, I can’t muster enthusiasm for something I don’t know anything about yet, I’m not going to praise them for showing a logo
I saw a 20 minute supercut of Todd Howard’s presentation so I unmuted and literally the first thing was him saying “make the gamer proud. make them proud to be playing your game” and I just turned it off. That’s so utterly the wrong attitude to have. I don’t want more of this type of RPG abandonment where the entire world revolves around the player and every event and mechanic panders to them, glorifies them as a violent hero, and never even tries to focus on anything else.
That’s been their mantra through skyrim, where nobody had anything resembling a personality and the only thing that mattered was Cool Stuff Happening To You - specifically ‘cool stuff’ from a 15 year old male point of view - and Fallout 3 and 4 which had less interest in making you a small cog in a big world of manipulation and intrigue, but rather sent all its resources into setpieces where you could use a nuke, or mini nuke launcher, or use power armour, and everyone loves you and oh you’re just the bestest hero ever it’s so inspiring when you blow things up, billy_everyteen
I’m not saying I am swearing off these titles but I am reserving judgement, because this mentality is at odds with Fallout’s purpose and it’ll result in yet another vapid, war-glorifying Fallout-themed vanity tour. A static world where the BoS are heroes of the wastes and you can shoot waves of big dumb mutants and they say ‘war never changes’ for the billionth fucking time but really, the world itself is what never changes because Bethesda are a business of monetising recognisable assets, not developers of organic situations and incentives. And there’s not much reason to believe TES6 might be any different.
